Veneers or lumineers: how to make your smile perfect

Marina Kolesnichenko, dentist, chief physician at Beauty Line, tells how to use the veneers, lumineers and ultranirs to get the smile of your dreams and achieve several goals at once - to correct the shape of the teeth and adjust their color.

- The principle of operation for all three is the same - porcelain plates are attached to the front surface of the teeth. Fundamentally, the difference is in millimeters. Most often, veneers have a thickness of 0.5-0.

6 millimeters - so that the veneer "sits" in place, the tooth has to grind. Although now there are already veneers with a thickness of 0.2 millimeters.

But the real champions in terms of thickness are the lumineers that emerged as a result of a real technological revolution. In thickness, they reach 0.

2-0.3 millimeters, because the turning of the teeth for their installation is no longer required. Such a miracle was made possible thanks to a technological breakthrough - with the help of leucite crystals and disilicate ceramics, porcelain became so strong that it became possible to produce incredibly thin plates.

And then what are ultranirs? Are they even thinner? Alas, no - such a name is just a marketing ploy of a St. Petersburg company.

Ultranirs are the same veneers and lumineers, just with a different, catchy name.

The main feature of porcelain plates : they do not solve just one problem with teeth, but relieve a whole range of troubles. Here are some defects that can be fixed with their help.

  • adjust the color (even get rid from stains on the teeth);
  • to correct the shape of the teeth (including the loss of tooth height can be corrected);
  • hide chips and cracks in the enamel, the effects of tooth injuries;
  • hide gaps between teeth;
  • hide old fillings that do not match the color of the tooth;
  • align teeth of different heights due to the manufacture of veneers and lumineers of different thicknesses;
  • fix some not too complex defects bite.

We should also mention the age correction - over time, the teeth are erased, this is due to chewing food and contact with the cheeks and lips. The height of the teeth also decreases, enamel exudes, through which the dentin begins to shine more strongly, from which the teeth look more yellow. Veneers or lumineers replace the enamel layer, return the teeth height and beautiful color, serve as additional protection.

First, the doctor examines dental condition: if necessary, prescribes treatment for caries or gums.

If you have no problems with oral health, then at the first appointment the doctor will select several options for the plates. This is done not by eye, but using computer technology: the patient is photographed, and then in a special program the doctor individually selects the shape and color of the veneers and lumineers.Selects so that they perfectly match the proportions of the face, the shape of the lip and skin tone. In this case, the patient can also take part in the selection of products.

After clarity comes with the shape and color, the doctor determines what suits you best - veneers or lumineers.

Then he makes a cast of the teeth and the waiting time comes.

At the second reception you will be offered to try on a wax model of veneers and lumineers. It is fully consistent with the computer, but the difference is that for the first time you will see yourself in the records and evaluate how they will look. In this case, no drilling of teeth is required.

If you like everything, then the doctor - in the case of veneers - performs a small turning of the teeth and puts temporary veneers on them, identical to the permanent ones.

If you chose lumineers, then no turning is required, you just leave the office and wait again - but these are real records.

The records are always placed on clean teeth, then There is a professional hygienic cleaning on the day of installation. Although if there is too much plaque and tartar, cleaning can be prescribed in advance.

Then, the doctor fixes the finished product on a transparent dressing gel (in the case of veneers - after removing the temporary plates). If you like everything, then they are removed, the gel is washed, and then veneers or lumineers are fixed on permanent cement.

The doctor’s office is equipped with an oven, which is activated if you want to make small changes in the shape or color of the plates. However, when the result is completely unsatisfactory for some reason, the products are sent for rework - then you need to wait again when the laboratory finishes working on them.

Veneers are almost always cheaper lumineers, but not because they are worse or their quality does not meet modern standards of dentistry. Not.

The fact is that all lumineers are manufactured in several laboratories in the United States, and therefore shipping costs are added to the price of the products.

If you follow the rules of hygiene and regularly, every six months, visiting the dentist, veneers and lumineers will last you 10-20 years. However, no special tools for the care of veneers and lumineers are required: an ordinary brush and paste are enough.

There are no lifestyle restrictions: you can go to the sauna and play sports. For boxers, hockey players and those who practice contact sports, doctors make protective mouth guards that protect natural teeth from injuries and porcelain plates from cracks.

In fact, the only contraindication is serious pathology of the bite, due to which there is increased wear of the teeth. Otherwise, thanks to high-strength materials and modern technologies, there are no contraindications.

The strength of the products allows them to protect their teeth from abrasion, regulate the masticatory load, maintain their appearance and not chip. Moreover, smooth porcelain is not susceptible to plaque settling and staining; it is not afraid of cigarettes, coffee, red wine, or other coloring products.

Previously it was believed that with periodontitis (chronic gum disease) veneers and lumineers should not be placed.

But now it has become possible in clinics that use microscopes to make plates. The microscope allows you to work out the cervical areas in detail and make sure that they have no ledges, no sharp edges, no protruding transitions that could accumulate plaque and provoke gum inflammation. The highest fit of veneer or lumineer in the cervical region allows you to install them with periodontitis.

It is worth noting separately that veneers and lumineers do not interfere with dental treatment - since the plates are located on the front surface, the back and lingual surfaces are completely accessible for any medical procedures.
