Entrepreneur and triathlete Alexei Panferov will share an inspiring story on how to defeat a deadly disease and become an “iron man” 14 times
I WANTED TO CHANGE
interview with triathlete and businessman Ilya Slepov
In 1965, agent 007 James Bond Checked the time by the To48 Time from Breit317ng. In the 1960s, the cult Navitimer began to wear world stars - musician Miles Davis, Formula 1 pilots Jim Clark and Graham Hill.
In the 1980s, watches adorned the hand of legendary singer Serge Gainsbourg.
Some fight with villains, others with speed, and others with notes and rhymes. Among us live heroes who defy circumstances. Today we’ll talk with Ilya Slepov, a triathlete, a master of sports in orienteering, an entrepreneur and the founder of the Race Laboratory chain of stores.
Ilya, in 2010 you started the triathlon.
Since then, one challenge has been replaced by another: a brilliant finish at SPRINT 2011 - 1st place in the group, after 2 years IRONMAN 70. 3 in Hawaii, where you became one of the 50 best athletes among 1,500 participants from around the world. Further - more: 2 km by swimming, 90 km by bike and 21 km by jogging in Canada, Australia, Panama, Spain, IRONMAN full distance in Mexico, all major Russian starts and, finally, the recent World Cup in South Africa. How many competitions are on your account?
Well, if you count with orienteering, then more than a thousand. I recently counted my medals.
For the first, second and third places, 320 pieces were gained. And since prizes were far from always, it means that I definitely did more than a thousand starts!
You studied at a sports school. When were you on the podium for the first time? What did you feel then?
I studied at a regular school, and went to sports school after school. From 9-10 years old, the first competition began. In 1991, I took 2nd place in orienteering competitions.
That night I even slept without removing the medal! I was really happy.
In the triathlon from the very beginning I wanted high achievements?
Yes, in the triathlon I immediately wanted to win. For some reason, it seemed to me that I was a divine swimmer, and I did not do swimming. But these were illusions: I lost the first competition to the fullest. That start was the worst in my career.
I failed everything, all stages. But wound up. I thought: the sport is cool, but I'm weak. I don’t know how to swim at all. I was 28 years old, but that did not stop me.
I decided: nothing, now let's start. And he began.
Leon Brightling establishes his workshop in the Swiss canton of Jura, specializing in the creation of chronographs and precision watch devices. These measuring instruments, designed for sports victories, scientific breakthroughs and industrial developments, immediately gained popularity, and especially in aviation circles.
Every year running is gaining more and more love.
Many people set a goal: to run a marathon, get ready for six months, finish, with relief they hang a medal on the wall - and return to normal life. Ilya, where does this desire to raise the bar all the time come from? Why not stop there?
I want to reach my limit. It is interesting to understand that you can, where is your maximum. I want to feel my boundaries. From time immemorial people traveled, moved to find out where the earth ends.
It’s the same here. We are trying to find out where we end. How strong we are that we can. Value is not in achievement. Breaking the finish line with your chest, you experience incredible emotions, but the path itself is much more important.
Here you work, make efforts. You live every day of your labor. And in return you get a high quality of life. You feel your body - strong, elastic, fast. It is capable of such a thing that you could not even think of 10 years ago.
Breitling has a rich, long history. I like things with a story. They carry the legacy of British pilots, the legacy of those who challenge themselves.
You set a super-high goal at the triathlon world championship in South Africa. Tell us about her.
I decided to try to get into the top 6 at the World Cup. None of the Russians had succeeded before. There was a girl who finished sixth, there was a guy who entered the top ten. I participated in the World Cup three times: in 2013 I became 97th, in 2015 - 37th, in 2016 - 31st. The people at the top of the table are either professionals or former professionals.
And I'm an amateur. We are in different conditions. They have several workouts per day and work related to sports. They are much easier. But I wanted to change the story.
I wanted to prove that I could break through to the elite with the strength and the ordinary, working person. Even then I went to study in Skolkovo, my wife and I had a second child. Business, family, children, study ...
It was hell! But when you burn with a goal, you find not justifications, but opportunities. Had to combine. I talked with employees sitting on a bicycle station. I held some business meetings on the run, invited my partners for jogging. Sitting in a restaurant, I rolled a golf ball under the table to strengthen the small muscles of the foot.
Work went on all the time.
As far as we know, not everything went smoothly with the preparation for running stage. After starting in Mallorca in May of this year, you had a spasm of the left adductor thigh muscle. How did the injury affect the mood for the championship?
I knew that there would be punctures. There will be injuries, illnesses, something will go wrong.
This is normal. As Engels said, a plan is not a dogma, but a guide to action. In business it is impossible to make perfect planning for several years ahead. At first, you can still make predictions, but no one knows what will happen next. So it is in sports.
You set a long-term goal, but do not know what will happen in a few months. Having been injured, I emphasized swimming and cycling. Running ruled out. Of course, I did not have enough training, but in the end everything worked out. I immediately said to myself: “Swim! This is a great chance to improve the technique!”
Breitling optimizes the chronograph, separating the start / stop functions from the “reset” to zero.
" This patented innovation allows you to add multiple time slots in a row.
You wrote on your blog that your beard was shaved off before the competition. This should have been saved in water and on a bicycle for about 20 seconds. What other victims did you have to make?
Yes, the beard had to be shaved off! Twenty seconds was worth it. Athletes also shave their legs: smooth skin enhances the aerodynamics of a bicycle.
Before the World Cup, I even shaved my hands. Cyclists said it would give another 5-10 seconds. What if they would become decisive? Victory in sports consists of the smallest details.
At the 14th kilometer of the race you were seventh, and for the remaining 7 km you had to play 2 minutes to enter the top six. Almost unrealistic task! Where did you get your strength for the last spurt?
Rule number 1: never give up.
Even if I had to play 20 minutes, I would still run to the limit. It doesn’t matter how scary the enemy is. Your fearlessness is important. We must fight to the end. Do not give up, no matter what.
I ran without hours, so I did not control the speed. I did not know my pulse, and did not want to know. I don't care what 2 minutes, I thought. He clicked on the gas and finished fourth!
All together! I like the way they look. This watch blends perfectly with my clothes, looks beautiful on the hand, attracts attention.
They are nice to wear. Status is not that important, but functionality matters. I use the built-in chronometer and do time cuts. The mechanical work of the shooter is fascinating.
In September, seconds decided on IRONSTAR Olym184ic in Sochi.
You won, and Anton Chuchko, who took the 2nd place, was 5 seconds behind you. Tell us about this finish.
The competitions were enchanting. Almost 700 people arrived. After the World Cup they came up to me, congratulated me.
They said that they were watching and sick. It started, I lit up - and invested in the race. The result was considered not by the first crossed finish, but by time. I started the farthest - in the second or third minute. I saw rivals ahead, covered them.
After 5 km of running I knew that I was losing to Anton, so the last 5 km ran even faster than the first. When I finished, I still did not know that I had won. I went to Anton, congratulated him. He was the strongest international master in triathlon there. And then Arsen Balayan, CEO Breitling, runs up to me with congratulations.
He shows the phone, and there: Slepov - 1st place. It was unexpected - and cool!
From sports, your challenges have passed into the business sphere. This is your first time in New Zealand saw how running shoes were selected based on video footage analysis and got excited to open the same store in Russia. What’s not a challenge! Tell us how the Running Laboratory developed.
"Laboratory Riya "is not my first project.
I started doing business at the university. Then I opened an online store selling sports watches with a heart rate monitor. Top of originality! In 2001, no one believed that anyone would need heart rate monitors, and especially since they will be bought by paying with cards. The Internet has just begun to develop, Yandex was only three years old. But the goods became in demand, and I opened the Running Laboratory with eight years of business experience.
In 1965 Ball Lightning, Sean Connery checked the time using a To217 Time watch with a built-in Geiger counter (this model was specially made for the film ), playing the role of James Bond, also known as Agent 007. In the late 1960s, iconic Navitimer began to be worn by world stars such as musician Miles Davis and athletes, including Formula 1 pilots Jim Clark and Graham Hill.
I thought about how to use a computer when selecting shoes, back in 1996. I already ran quite well then, my friends and I had asics sneakers. I thought: why ?.
We run differently. That would be great to make a 3D model of the runner! Calculate all angles: how it lands, how it moves. And understand what kind of sneakers fit him. After 15 years, it turned out that they did just that in New Zealand. I immediately approached and said: "Let's get the program, I’m buying a license.
I believe in what I am promoting. My first heart rate monitor appeared in 1997, and I was stunned by the opportunities that it gave. With him, the runners could understand how the body reacts to the load. Believing in heart rate monitors, I opened a business. I wanted others to appreciate the new technologies too.
In an October interview with the Kommersant newspaper, you said: “Triathlon is a challenge, an opportunity to test yourself. That’s why there are so many business people here who are used to succeed. Where still running with governors and millionaires? " Is there an inverse relationship? First, we challenge the sport, and then become winners in life?
There are, of course! Here you are 8 years old, and you challenge the sport. And then at 30 you become a winner (laughs). My advice: challenge as early as possible.
Sport perfectly tempers character. It is impossible to be in the first place if you have not worked more than others. Hard work, constancy decides everything. Hit the point. Fall, but rise.
Again and again. Every day, from month to month, from year to year.
Ilya, you infected not only subscribers to the triathlon with love social networks, but also parents. Your mother is 66 years old, father 68, and this year you enrolled them in a triathlon competition. The challenge of "all ages submissive"?
Yes! I gave my mom a birthday slot, and dad laughed at it for a long time.
And then I gave him a slot so that he didn’t laugh ... Together they overcame the first triathlon. Mom was able to swim only breaststroke.
We worked out five times in the pool - and she went. Imagine, at 66, she swam the crawl the entire distance - a whole kilometer! Proud of her.
Ernest's son, Theodor Schneider, leads Breitling in the era of “100% timepieces”
Now many are talking about informational detox. Two days before starting in South Africa, you refused to view social networks. How did this help you tune in to the competition?
This is an important element of preparation.
For me, training is a kind of meditation. I want to be alone with myself, so I never run around with the phone. At the World Cup, I disconnected for two days, so that social networks do not take away emotions and energy. I focused on myself, because after 48 hours, what I was going to do all year was to come.
You covered the entire distance without a sports watch and heart rate monitor.
Did the equipment malfunction? Or was it a conscious decision?
I did not want to be distracted by anything. Yes, so few do, but professionals go for it. Watch limit. You think: the pace is too high, I won’t run. How do you know? Give it a try.
Run as fast as you can. Run, Forest, run!
They are indispensable when you need functionality, a stopwatch and when they suit the style. A watch is the only accessory that is appropriate for a man. A beautiful watch with history is the best choice.
With such a busy schedule, is it possible to eat right and find the time to sleep?
Without this far you will not leave! I needed to lose weight.
The Olympic Committee said that if I remove 5 kg due to fat, the results will improve much. For the first time in my life, I began to stick to a diet. It was difficult, for two months the weight stood still. But I worked hard - and the matter went. In the evening I didn’t eat anything flour, excluded sweets.
Sleeping is also difficult. And the children interfere with sleep, and the schedule is irregular. I set a goal: go to bed until eleven at least three times a week. Then increased to five times a week. It didn’t always work out five, but three times it was iron.
When you put severe restrictions, you find ways to follow them. I stopped making appointments at a later time. If they were delayed, then he got up and said that I should go. A healthier dream - higher efficiency, more chance of success!
Ilya, what is the motto of life to help achieve success in sports and in business?
Car312e diem. Seize the moment! When a difficult task arises in front of me, where I need to choose something, I ask myself the question: what if I have only one month left to live? And all doubts immediately go away.
Such decisions force one to leave the comfort zone, which means living and feeling one hundred percent!
I WILL NEVER GO FROM DISTANCE
