On the cover of a special issue, a model in burkini will appear for the first time.
Twenty-one-year-old model Halima Aden became the first Muslim model to appear for a magazine in burkini and hijab. Burkini is a special indoor swimsuit that meets the requirements of Islam. Filming for the May issue of swimwear took place on the Kenyan Watamu beach.
Halima Aden was born in Kenya in a refugee camp and at seven she moved to the United States.
“I remember growing up in a refugee camp in this country. Growing up to fulfill our American dream and return to Kenya for a Sports Illustrated photo shoot - I don’t think anyone could have imagined such a story,” the model said.
At 19, the girl entered the semifinals of the Miss Minnesota beauty pageant, becoming the first participant in the hijab. Halima Aden has already managed to appear for the covers of
and Arab Vogue and to participate in the shows of New York Fashion Week. In July 2018, the
the ambassador of the UNICEF Foundation and now helps children around the world who have suffered from military conflicts.
Aden hopes the shooting for Sports Illustrated helps Muslim women to accept themselves and prove to everyone that a woman in a hijab and burkini can be beautiful.
