, 27% of Russian employees cannot go on vacation, because they have no one to leave their jobs for, another 21% continue to work on vacation, and 8% prefer not to rest at all. What is the danger of a constant desire to work and how to deal with it?

In Japan, there is a special term - "karoshi" , in translation, it means "death from overwork at work" (the main medical reasons for this are stroke or heart attack due to stress). In the Land of the Rising Sun, the number of such deaths is constantly growing.

The first time the karosi was recorded in 1969, this happened to the 29-year-old employee of a Japanese newspaper.

Since 1987, the Japanese Ministry of Labor, under pressure from the public, began annually publishing official statistics on work fatigue deaths. Japanese employers and the government are struggling with workaholics, but the latter often have a greater fear of losing their jobs.

In 2009, Mitsubishi Bank allowed its employees to leave the workplace three hours earlier to care for children and elderly parents, but out of 7 thousand people, only 34 took advantage of this right.

This approach is largely explained by unwritten laws, according to which any employee of a Japanese company is simply obliged to process it - otherwise he will fail the team and violate corporate ethics.

Of course, workaholics are not only in Japan, just this country is the most striking example. How do workaholics differ from other office workers? The main feature of workaholics is that they do not know how to distinguish between work and other areas of their own lives.

- A person gives work to fill all areas of his life : he doesn’t rest if he talks with someone, mainly on business matters, does not pay enough attention to sports, and most importantly, he does not fully understand why he goes to work.

If you notice that work is absorbing you more and more, it's time to ask yourself questions:

  • How do you want to live in three, five, ten years?
  • How will your day be built?
  • How much time do you want to devote to work, and how much - to your close ones?
  • How much do you Do you want to travel?

For many workaholics, no the line between work and vacation: 56% of Russians, according to a survey of the portal Rabota. ru, conducted in 2019, they plan to work on vacation - to check mail and be in touch with colleagues (17%), to work full-time (16%) or to periodically be included in the performance of work tasks (15%).

The inability to clearly distinguish between work and vacation occurs for several reasons. One of them is inability to say no . In this case, you can be easily manipulated, saying that you cannot be managed without you.

Anna Zhuravleva, psychologist-consultant, author of the project # eclectic meeting, also notes that in this situation you can be trapped in promises that you cannot always fulfill.

- Now is not the time, I’ll work just a little bit, because tomorrow the check and a colleague are on vacation, and the report has not been completed. I’ll work for another six months and then ...

After six months, something else is very important and unfinished. It is difficult for such a person to relax; he is almost always mobilized. And even watching the series for half an hour without remorse and guilt is a problem for him.

Sometimes such employees develop self-doubt and think that someone else will be replaced in their place during the holidays.

There is another extreme: a sense of one's own greatness and indispensability .

Such employees most often tell themselves that colleagues cannot do without them, because all projects are based on them. The only way out is to learn how to delegate tasks and trust colleagues.

The third option is dependence on work . Activity captures you, all tasks seem very interesting to you, and you cannot stop. In this situation, the main thing is to realize that you have not been on vacation for a long time, discuss this with your bosses, remember the delegation of authority and still switch to the "rest" mode.

- Today it is no secret that working hard is harmful. Moreover, if you work a lot, it means that your effectiveness is poor.

It has already been proven that the more a person works and the longer he does not rest, the more his communication with the body and emotions is broken. A person becomes vulnerable and unproductive.

A tired employee can complete the task for an hour, while a rested person can do it for 15-20 minutes.

"Wearing life only kills our productivity, creativity and well-being. Studies show that after a short respite, we are experiencing an upsurge in creative thinking, finding solutions and new ideas, and also feeling more satisfied, "said Stu Friedman, director of the Warton project on the study of the balance between work and personal life at the University of Pennsylvania, author of the book “Lead the Life You Want" ( Leading the Life You Want ).

Lyudmila Saloid adds that workaholics have a strong bias towards work and others, no less important, begin to suffer aspects of life: family, health, friends. In such a situation, the first thing to do is ask yourself whether workaholism brings you closer to an ideal life.

- This point is not obvious to many, however, having formed a vision of your future, you will begin to take more conscious actions, and then very often an understanding comes for which you work so hard. Thanks to this, many of my clients changed their approach to work: they found the opportunity to work 2-3 days a week, someone decided to go on freelance, without losing productivity. They simply realized that without this they did not feel happy, and found an opportunity to live as the soul asks, and not force circumstances.

The next step is to turn on the "Observer" mode and see from the side whether your health is in order, how effective you are in the cycle of affairs and what emotions you experience. Until you draw conclusions, just observe and record.

Without these steps, it will be difficult to take a conscious step to improve the situation.

- As practice shows Until a person realizes that workaholism is more harmful than helpful, he will ignore any advice.
