But there are not so many : nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), partial agonists of nicotinic receptors varenicline and cytisine, and atypical antidepressant bupropion.
This is an alternative method of nicotine delivery into the body. This method is used to reduce withdrawal symptoms during smoking cessation. There are several types of NRT drugs; they differ in the time it takes for nicotine to enter the bloodstream and for its removal from the body.
Nicotine patches release the same dose of nicotine within 16-24 hours. Sublingual tablets, chewing gums and sprays deliver nicotine into the body much faster, but their duration is shorter. Studies have shown that the use of patches with an increased dose of nicotine increases the chances of successful quitting. It has been proved and the fact that the use of the spray reduces nicotine cravings faster than sublingual lozenges. It is estimated that works best when combined NRT works when long-acting drugs are combined with short-acting drugs, such as a patch with lollipops.
They are not contain nicotine and are considered partial agonists of nicotine receptors in the brain. Cytisine is a plant substance that is actively used in the treatment of nicotine addiction in Eastern Europe, and varenicline was obtained by chemical transformations from cytisine.
On the one hand, 40–60% less dopamine (a hormone of joy) is released when taking varenicline than when stimulating receptors with nicotine. On the other hand, varenicline inhibits the interaction of nicotine with receptors. This is enough to feel satisfaction and at the same time not want to smoke.
Thanks to recent clinical studies, varenicline can be considered safe even for patients with cardiovascular and nervous disorders, despite such a warning in the instructions.
This is an antidepressant , which is used not only for the treatment of depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but also in the fight against smoking, obesity and for the treatment of sexual dysfunction. Bupropion was less effective during research than varenicline, but it should not be discounted: combined NRT combined with bupropion can increase the chances of successful smoking cessation and reduce the risk of weight gain.
In Russia, many brands offer plasters, chewing gums and sprays. Varenicline and cytisine can be bought in pill form, but you must first consult your doctor.
Remember: all of these drugs have an impressive list of side effects and contraindications, therefore, without the supervision of a competent specialist, do not prescribe yourself therapy yourself.
